“Vietnamese Coffee”
Coffee was introduced to Vietnam by French colonists in the 19th century. The first coffee plantations were established in the Da Lat region, where the climate was conducive to coffee cultivation.
Over the years, coffee cultivation expanded to other regions of Vietnam, notably to Buôn Ma Thuột in the Đắk Lắk province, which became renowned for its coffee plantations. Vietnam is now one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of coffee, predominantly of robusta.
Vietnamese coffee has developed its distinctive characteristics, particularly with the creation of “cà phê sữa đá” (Vietnamese iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk). This beverage has become emblematic of Vietnamese coffee culture.
During the Vietnam War, coffee was cultivated and consumed despite the challenges. Local cafés, often referred to as “cà phê vỉa hè” (sidewalk cafés), played a crucial social role during this difficult period.
Vietnam is also known for its innovations in the coffee industry, including “cà phê trứng” (egg coffee), which is unique and delicious. New coffee variations continue to emerge, showcasing the creativity of the Vietnamese coffee scene.
